Introducing Google’s O3D API – Browser Based 3D API

Kindly hold your VRML jokes until the end…

O3D is an open-source web API for creating rich, interactive 3D applications in the browser. This API is shared at an early stage as part of a conversation with the broader developer community about establishing an open web standard for 3D graphics.

Google’s new API is interesting, but 3D content has been accessible from inside the web browser for years. For example, Cartoon Networks even made their fullblown MMO FusionFall as a 3D in-browser game with Unity. Also smaller indie game developers use Unity; for example games like Off-Road Velociraptor Safari and RC Laser Warrior.

Curiously, Google’s Beach Demo looks somewhat similar to Unity’s older Tropical Paradise Demo:

But it will be interesting to see where things will be going with an open source project like this! Once it has matured a bit more, it will certainly have potential.
